Acts 16 v 25-31

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

What must I do? is a common question today.  We live in an age where nothing is given away and if we want something we have to earn it.  Salvation however is a different matter we can do nothing ourselves to be saved, it can only come through Jesus Christ.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Why do I need to be saved?  Romans 3 v 23 tells us "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God".  The sin in our life needs to be dealt with and the Lord Jesus Christ came to the earth with the purpose of dealing with that sin at Calvary.

We read in the Old Testament the priests offered up sacrifices for the sins of the people.  They took a lamb and looked at it to ensure that it was perfect and had no defect, and only then was it acceptable before God.  A sacrifice had to be offered up for our sins and in the same way it had to be perfect.  As each one of us comes from the generation of Adam we have the inherent problem of sin.  But the Lord Jesus was one who was perfect because he was the Son of God and was born of a virgin.  John said as Jesus approached him "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world".  He could see the one who through the shedding of his blood would bring us forgiveness for our sins and make us acceptable in the sight of God.

How can I be saved?  So in answer to our original question "What must I do" we have to believe on Lord Jesus Christ and realise that he died at Calvary for us. We have to admit that we are sinners and that we need to ask God for forgiveness.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3 v 16
